Kobziar house in Jewett purchased in 1950

In 1950, Ivan-Volodymyr Kobziar drove his young family in a wood-paneled station wagon, 9 hours from Manhattan to show them the house and land that they would eventually come to call their own. That year, they moved here permanently. Sixty-two years later, the Kobziar family, one of the earliest Ukrainians to settle on the Mountaintop, still resides on their property on the corner of Routes 17 and 23A in Jewett, across from the Xenia Motel they used to own.

The Kobziars are reknown for their hospitality and fostering the social scene in this

Ukrainian enclave for many decades.   In fact, the inspiration to build the motel grew out of the need to house the myriad friends and parents of children who stayed with the Kobziars during the summer months!

As our Ukrainian Mountaintop Oral History Project continues, we share excerpts from two interviews conducted with V. Kobziar’s widow, Olha Kobziar, now 94.  She spoke with her son Yuri on a recent May afternoon in 2012 about how they came to be here. (this clip is in Ukrainian)

In this second clip, Mrs. Kobziar speaks with Natalia Sonevytsky, a long-time acquaintance who has spent the last 30 years developing the Music and Art Center of Greene County, founded by her late husband, maestro Ihor Sonevystky.   Mrs. Kobziar and Mrs. Sonevtysky reminisce about the famous concerts, literary evenings, exhibits and parties held at the Kobziar’s Xenia Motel during its heydey.
