Oral History Project

Ukrainian Mountaintop Oral History Project

An oral history of parishioners and the Ukrainian community surrounding St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Jewett, N.Y.

What is the UMOHP?
An oral history project akin to public radio’s StoryCorps™, comprised of one-on-one interviews between you and your friends or loved ones (max. 30 minutes each), which focus on memories about the building and blessing of the church, and parish and community life now and/or in the past. All interviews form the “corps” which will be archived in digital format.

Why?
This project began in 2011 in preparation for St. John’s 50th anniversary. The goal is to record and archive the history of Mountaintop Ukrainians for the benefit of future generations. In September 2012, the Jubilee Organizing Committee decided to extend this project indefinitely.

When?
2014 recording sessions will take place by appointment. Appointments may be made via e-mail: [email protected].

Do I need to sign up or register?
Yes. You may register via e-mail: [email protected].

Are there any registration costs?
No. Participation in the project is free and voluntary.

Where will the interview take place?
During the summer months, in Grazhda. Otherwise, arrangements may be made to meet at a location convenient for all participants.

Who may I interview?
Anyone with any kind of sentiment or connection to the parish, community or Catskills! For example, your mother, father, sister, brother, relative, friend, neighbor – anyone with specific memories of the church’s inception, or with information about the development of the surrounding Ukrainian community (land acquisition, cultural life, etc.), or anecdotes regarding Ukrainian life on the Mountaintop.

Do questions need to be prepared beforehand?
You are welcome to bring prepared questions or use sample questions.

Can the interview be conducted in English?
Yes.

Where will the recordings be presented?
With the participants’ consent, portions of interviews will be posted on the parish website: UkrainianMountaintop.org. Listeners will have a chance to hear reminiscences of others, as well as learn more about the oral history project.

In Grazhda.
