Jubilee

St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Jewett Center, N.Y. Celebrates its Golden Jubilee in 2012

It is colloquially known as one of the “jewels in the crown of the Catskills” or “the church held together without nails”.  Indeed St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church located off of Route 23A, six miles west of Hunter Mountain, is a unique and outstanding structure.  A beautiful timber church kept together with wooden pegs, not dissimilar in architectural style to those found in the Carpathian Mountains of Ukraine, it rests on top of a high grassy hill for drivers and passers-by to admire.  Inside is a feast for the eyes as well with hand painted icons, an iconostas and a wood-carved chandelier.

St. John’s Church and its complimentary buildings: the bell tower, gate, parish hall (“Grazhda”) and rectory, were the tangible expression of a generation of Ukrainian immigrants that came to the U.S. in the late 1940’s to re-create a familiar place to them: their homeland.

The church was built in 1962 thanks to the Herculean efforts of philanthropists, master craftsmen, artists, construction professionals and many very dedicated volunteers. For 50 years, these people, their descendants and Ukrainian Americans from all walks of life have shared and delighted in the creation and cultivation of a thriving and rich religious and cultural enclave found right here in the Catskill Mountains. The church regularly summons visitors to tour the grounds and take a peek within, and also serves as a hub for world-class entertainment during the summertime, as the Grazhda is home to weekly classical music performances for the general public.

In honor of St. John’s Golden Jubilee several anniversary celebrations are planned starting on Saturday, June 30th with a community Festival featuring exhibits, tours, entertainment, family activities, vendors, food and more. “This commemorative and fun occasion unveils the parish’s jubilee season and will attract hundreds of parishioners, visitors, tourists, and residents,” remarks Ivanka Iwaskiw, chairperson of the Jubilee Festival Committee. “Whether it’s to experience a new culture, get in touch with your roots, or just be part of the anniversary celebration, all are invited to enjoy the serenity of the mountains and celebrate half-a-century of the church’s contribution to the local mountaintop community,” adds Iwaskiw.  The opening ceremony will begin on church grounds at 11:00 a.m.  Admission is free.

Saturday’s Festival will also premier the jubilee photo exhibit titled “50 Years in Pictures” which will be displayed in Grazhda’s gallery throughout the summer along with the annual fine art exhibit.

The jubilee season concludes with a Pontifical Divine Liturgy, Banquet and Anniversary program on Sunday, September 2nd. “The 50th Anniversary Banquet following Liturgy will feature a wonderful cultural program which will include community performances from members of different generations in various genres. Children, seniors and those in between will debut their talents in celebration of our church’s 50th anniversary,” says Ivan Makar, co-chair of the Jubilee Program Committee.  Tickets may be purchased prior to the event, but none will be sold at the door.

We hope to see you this summer!

Many Hands Make Light Work

St. John the Baptist Church in Jewett and its surrounding buildings were built by many hands – some better known than others.  There were philanthropists, volunteers, craftsmen and construction professionals including Mr. William Mead.  Mr. Mead is a longtime resident of Jewett and former owner of the excavating company hired to work at the church site.  After taking over the company from his predecessor Henry Kramer, Mr. Mead suddenly found himself in the company of several Ukrainian co-workers: Dr. Ivan Makarewycz, master carpenter Jurij Kostiw, Rudy Balan, “Kozak” Maksym Kurys and others.

Over the years, William Mead has continued to have ties with our community and still remembers that special time nearly 50 years ago, when various people came together and with dedication and perspiration built our beloved spiritual and cultural center, or in his words, “a monument”.  As part of our Ukrainian Mountaintop Oral History Project, Mr. Mead shared some of his fondest memories with Xenia Ferencevych.  Click here to listen to excerpts (in English).

Children of “The hilltop”

Those of us who grew up on the Ukrainian Mountaintop, either during the summer or year round, have the exact same memories: swimming in Schoharie Creek or the pools at Grand Gorge, “Shkola na horbochku” led by maestro Ihor and pani Natalka Sonevytsky, Sunday liturgies followed by varenyky in the Grazhda, concerts or events at “Xenia” or “Karpatia”, forts and campfires in the woods, KLK ski races, skiing, hiking, folk art courses and folk singing with pani Nusia, blessing fruit baskets during “Spasa” and much, much more.  Do you remember?  Do your children now breathe the same fresh mountain air and enjoy the refreshing water of the creek?  We hope you derive as much pleasure going down memory lane as we do.   Though there are countless photos of kids on “the hilltop” and multiplying by the year, we’ve posted some oldies-but-goodies here.  You are also welcome to share your own and learn how you and your children can participate in this summer’s jubilee celebrations!
